Sun Safety Tips
Wear Protective Clothing
Whether you’re tending to your summer garden or your occupation requires you to spend a significant amount of time outdoors, it’s important to keep your skin protected with cool, breathable clothing. The weather in Bee Cave can get oppressively hot throughout the year, so you’ll want to find lightweight clothing that allows you to move comfortably and won’t cause you to overheat.
Additionally, you’ll want to invest in a hat that covers both your head and face. Wide-brimmed hats are ideal, but you should also use a quality sunscreen on your ears and neck. We’ll cover sunscreen in more depth below!
Invest in Quality Sunglasses
Excessive sun exposure can cause cataracts and other vision problems. While any pair of sunglasses is better than none, you should look for a pair that blocks between 90% and 100% of UVB and UVA rays.
Always Wear Sunscreen
As a Top Rated Local® skin care clinic in Bee Cave, we’d be failing ourselves and our clients if we didn’t mention the importance of sunscreen. Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, and be sure to reapply it every 60 to 90 minutes. If you’re sweating or spending a significant amount of time in the water, then reapply it sooner.
At Hill Family Medicine, we know that many of our patients don’t like using sunscreen because of the way it feels or because it clogs their pores. As skin care experts, we can make personalized recommendations that keep you safe and comfortable whenever you’re out in the sun.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve lived in Texas your entire life or you’re used to being out in the sun — heat exhaustion is a condition that can affect anyone. Take a break to sit in the shade and be sure to drink plenty of water, especially if you’re exercising or you’re going to be outdoors for the majority of the day. Hydrating beverages containing electrolytes are also great options, though you should look for brands that don’t add sugar to their products.
