Create a Diet and Stick To It

It can often be tempting to binge on junk food, especially with the upcoming holidays, and end-of-the-season BBQ’s or parties. It is fine to occasionally treat yourself to an extra burger or treat, but regularly maintaining a healthy diet should always be a top priority in your life. A regular diet promotes weight loss, decreases the risk of disease, improves heart health, creates a more positive mental attitude, and more! Each person has varying needs depending on height, weight, gender, activity levels, and many other factors, so work to find the right diet plan that will help you meet your goals, and stick to it. The longer you adhere to a diet, the easier it becomes to resist temptation and enjoy the health benefits.

Along with food, beware of overindulging in alcohol. Alcohol can dehydrate you, which can be especially dangerous on the hot days in Bee Cave. If you’re spending time outside, your water levels may already be lower because of sweat, so always be sure you are drinking enough water to compensate and hydrate your body. In men, drinking too much alcohol can lead to lower testosterone levels. This can be dangerous and is often the cause of unexplained weight gain, demotivation, low sex drive, chronic fatigue, and more. If you are already experiencing these symptoms, Hill Family Medicine can help! Our specialists offer low testosterone evaluations and treatment to aid you on your health journey.

Exercise

Regular physical activity is very important for prolonged physical well-being. Exercising regularly can help to prevent or control diseases and medical issues like stroke, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and more. When you partake in regular exercise as well as a healthy diet, the two factors work together to promote weight loss from fat, and maintenance of a regular and ideal weight.

Exercise also contributes to brain function and mental health. By increasing the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain, physical activity enhances the growth of brain cells. This growth can help maintain or increase your memory, learning, and judgement as your body ages.

In our previous two posts, we discussed the benefits of regular exercise in greater detail, so be sure to check those articles out to learn more about the mental and physical profits from sustained, scheduled exercise.

Stay Hydrated

You’ve probably heard it said that humans can only survive three days without water. Making sure that you constantly have enough water in your system will always promote a healthier life, and assist with all of the tips mentioned so far. Doctors recommend that you drink at least 60-70 ounces of water each day. This works out to about eight cups of water each day with a serving size of 8 ounces each time. If you plan on spending time outside when it is hot, or partaking in a rigorous workout routine, you may even want to increase your water intake further to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion. Aside from keeping you alive and ensuring that your body functions normally, drinking more water has bonus side effects! Water helps flush toxins from the body, can help reduce hangovers, increase brain function, promote healthy skin, and more!

Take a Vacation

The fall is a beautiful time to take a few days to yourself and get away from the hustle and bustle for a little bit of rest and relaxation. Vacations are usually pretty fun and exciting on their own, but they also have hidden health benefits! Time off helps to improve mental health, decrease stress, and lower blood pressure. They also promote lots of rest, and sleep is very important to your overall health. When you don’t get enough sleep, you increase your risk of sickness, your mental functions can slow down, and you can be at risk of accidents when your mind checks out. Rest also helps control weight gain and loss, improve your emotional well-being, increase concentration and productivity, and raise your immune functions. It is recommended that you get seven hours of sleep at a minimum each day. So take a little time away, even for a staycation, and do something fun and have a few restful days.
